(Washington, DC) – Jeff Bezos is calling for the bottom half of American workers to pay no taxes, arguing that the tax burden should be shifted away from lower-income earners.

The comment adds a new wrinkle to the national debate over wealth, taxation and who should fund government spending.

Bezos, one of the richest people in the world, has also pushed back on the idea that simply taxing billionaires more can solve every public policy problem.

His position appears to combine two arguments: lower-income workers need relief, but politicians should not pretend that higher taxes on the wealthy are a magic fix for failing systems.

The comment is likely to be used by both sides of the tax debate — by conservatives arguing for tax relief and by populists pressing billionaires on what they believe the wealthy should contribute.
