Jeff Bezos Pushes Back on Mamdani’s Tax-the-Rich Plan

(New York, New York) – Jeff Bezos is pushing back hard against Zohran Mamdani’s pitch to raise taxes on the wealthy, arguing that soaking billionaires would not fix New York City’s deeper problems.

The Amazon founder said that even if his own taxes were doubled, it still would not solve the issues Democrats claim higher taxes are meant to address, including struggling schools, unaffordable living costs and city services under pressure.

Bezos’ argument takes direct aim at one of Mamdani’s central economic messages: that New York can fund major new programs by forcing the city’s richest residents to pay more.

Critics of that approach say it ignores a basic reality of high-tax states and cities — wealthy people and businesses can leave. If they do, the tax burden does not disappear. It shifts onto everyone else.

Mamdani and his allies have framed the plan as a way to make the rich pay their “fair share,” but Bezos’ comments are likely to fuel a broader debate over whether New York can tax its way out of its budget and affordability problems.
