(Washington, DC) – The Supreme Court has delivered a major boost to Alabama Republicans in the national fight over congressional maps. The ruling gives Alabama new room to move forward with a map more favorable to the GOP, after lower courts had pushed for changes tied to Black voter representation.

Republicans are calling it a victory against race-based mapmaking. They argue states should not be forced to draw districts primarily around race when building congressional lines. Democrats and civil-rights groups see the decision as a setback. They warn it could weaken minority voting power and make it harder to challenge maps across the South.

The political stakes are enormous. Control of the House could come down to a handful of seats, and redistricting fights are now as important as campaigns themselves. For Alabama Republicans, the ruling is a green light. For Democrats, it is another warning that the 2026 map war is already underway.
