A Teenage Cousin Killed Two Brothers Critical Following a Labor Day Crash on the LIE

Melville, NY (77WABC)-A 19-year-old teenager was killed and two others critically injured in a Labor Day crash on the Long Island Expressway.

Detectives from Suffolk County’s Second Squad say the driver of a 2005 Honda Civic driven by 18-year-old Erick Alvarado of Hicksville, was traveling eastbound on the LIE  near Exit 49S when he struck an eastbound 2020 Mazda SUV around 9:50 pm. The Mazda was driven by 24-year-old Shadman Sami of Jamaica, Queens. Both vehicles left the roadway and crashed into the woods.

Alvarado was transported to Plainview Hospital and Sami was transported to Huntington Hospital both with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say a 19-year-old male passenger in the Honda, Josue Melendez-Florez of Hicksville,  was transported to Plainview Hospital where he was pronounced dead. A second male passenger, 14-year-old Kevin Florez of Hicksville,  was transported to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow in critical condition. A third male passenger, 18-years-old Cristian Florez of Hicksville, the brother of Kevin, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical condition. The man killed was their cousin.

The names of the passengers are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Both vehicles were impounded for safety inspections. Detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to contact the Second Squad at 631-854-8252.
