NYC Ambulance Response Times Spike

(New York, NY) – If you need an ambulance in the city you better hope that time is on your side. A new report from Mayor Adams’s office found that the response time for life-threatening emergencies jumped by over half a minute. In the last part of the fiscal year, ambulances were averaging times of eight minutes and 14 seconds. The first part of the 2025 fiscal year had averages rising to eight minutes and 48 seconds.

The FDNY is blaming insufficient staffing numbers for the high response times. When it comes to the trouble they have with recruitment and retention, the department says that low salaries are not very attractive to potential emergency personnel. The union representing paramedics and fire inspectors is one of the handful of groups that have not reached a new labor contract under Mayor Eric Adams. The department says their ultimate goal is to get response times for life-threatening emergencies down to under five minutes.
