(Washington, DC) – Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger is signing a new executive order aimed at limiting state cooperation with federal law enforcement activity around polling places.

Spanberger says the move is meant to protect voters from intimidation and prevent federal officers from creating fear at or near voting locations. The order is being framed by her office as a voter-access and public-confidence measure.

The order comes as Democrats raise concerns about the possible presence of federal agents near polling places in future elections. Supporters say voters should be able to cast ballots without feeling watched, pressured or threatened.

Critics, however, argue the move is another example of a Democratic governor trying to block federal law enforcement and politicize election security. They say federal officers may be needed in some situations to respond to threats, enforce the law or protect public safety.

The dispute is likely to fuel another fight over the line between election protection and law enforcement authority. For Spanberger, the message is that Virginia will put voter comfort and access first. For opponents, the concern is that the order could limit cooperation with federal agencies at a time when election-related tensions remain high.
