U.S. Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) speaks with the press after the Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives passed bipartisan legislation to fund Department of Homeland Security agencies including the Secret Service and Transportation Security Administration in a move to end the partial shutdown that has gripped their operations for nearly 11 weeks, on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., U.S., April 30, 2026. (Washington, DC) – Sen. Josh Hawley is again targeting Dr. Anthony Fauci, accusing him of playing a role in funding research connected to the Wuhan lab at the center of the COVID origins debate.

Hawley’s accusation keeps one of the biggest pandemic questions alive: whether U.S. money helped support risky research overseas before COVID spread across the world.

Fauci has denied wrongdoing for years and has defended his record as part of the government’s pandemic response. But Republicans continue to argue that Americans never got full transparency about federal grants, lab research and the early dismissal of the lab-leak theory.

The hallway exchange gives the story new life because it reduces a complicated issue to a simple question: did U.S. officials help fund research that should never have happened?
