(Beijing, China) – President Trump is touting what he says are major wins from Chinese President Xi Jinping, including help on Iran and new Chinese purchases of American goods.

According to the claims, Xi agreed to assist the U.S. on Iran, buy more American soybeans, increase purchases of U.S. oil and LNG, and move forward with a large Boeing jet order.

The announcement gives Trump a major foreign-policy and economic victory to sell at home. Farmers, energy producers and aerospace workers have all been central to Trump’s message that America should use its leverage to bring jobs and money back into the country.

The Iran piece may be even bigger. With tensions in the Middle East threatening energy markets, Trump is trying to position China not as a blocker, but as a country willing to work with him when global pressure builds.

If the commitments hold, Trump gets to argue that his personal diplomacy is producing results where traditional diplomacy failed.
