(Washington, DC) – Rep. Nancy Mace is drawing attention with a blunt message on immigration: America’s obligation is to its own citizens first.

Mace said the country owes illegal immigrants nothing, while arguing that veterans deserve everything from the nation they served. The statement quickly spread because it put two emotionally charged issues side by side — illegal immigration and the treatment of American veterans.

Her argument is aimed directly at federal and local spending priorities. Conservatives have increasingly criticized governments for spending heavily on migrant services while many veterans still struggle with housing, medical care and benefits.

Democrats are likely to call the comment harsh and anti-immigrant. Mace’s supporters will say it is a long-overdue reality check about who the government is supposed to serve.
