(New York, New York) – Sen. Ted Cruz is unloading on Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, accusing the progressive congresswoman of building a career off the very taxpayers she claims to defend.
Cruz’s attack centers on AOC’s path from bartender to member of Congress and national political celebrity. He argued that her government salary and platform are funded by taxpayers, while she continues attacking the system that pays her.
The line is intentionally harsh, and it is aimed at the heart of AOC’s political brand. She presents herself as a voice for working people against powerful institutions. Cruz is flipping that image and portraying her as someone who benefits from government while condemning others who succeed outside it.
AOC’s supporters will call the attack elitist and personal. Cruz’s audience will see it as a direct hit on progressive hypocrisy.
