(New York, New York) – Former Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard is taking a swing at New York City politics — and Mayor Zohran Mamdani is the target.

Syndergaard, once known to Mets fans as “Thor,” called Mamdani a “lunatic” and suggested his former team should stop associating with socialist leadership if they want to turn things around on the field.

The comment quickly caught attention because it mixed two things New Yorkers argue about constantly: the Mets and City Hall. For frustrated fans, the line landed as a joke with a political edge. For Mamdani supporters, it will likely be dismissed as another celebrity shot at the mayor from the right.

The Mets’ struggles have already created plenty of anger among fans, and Syndergaard’s post gave that frustration a new target. Instead of just blaming injuries, bad hitting or front office decisions, he tied the team’s slump to the political culture around New York.

It may not be a traditional sports story anymore. In Mamdani’s New York, even baseball frustration is turning into a political fight.
