(New York, New York) – Stephen A. Smith is stirring debate after saying he wishes Black Americans would vote Republican for one election.

His argument is not that every Black voter should become conservative. Instead, Smith says Democrats have taken Black voters for granted because the party knows it can count on overwhelming support election after election. In his view, voting Republican even once would force both parties to compete harder for Black Americans.

The comment immediately sparked reaction because it challenges one of the most reliable voting patterns in modern politics. Democrats have dominated among Black voters for decades, while Republicans have struggled to make serious inroads.

Supporters of Smith’s point say political loyalty without leverage is bad strategy. Critics argue Republicans have not earned that support and that Democratic policies still better reflect Black voters’ priorities.
