(New York, New York) – New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani was introduced at a Ramadan celebration on Staten Island by a pro-Palestinian activist whose past protest chants are drawing renewed scrutiny online.

The mayor appeared at the event after being introduced by Abdullah Akl, the advocacy director for the Muslim American Society of New York.

Videos circulating on social media show Akl previously leading crowds at pro-Palestinian demonstrations chanting slogans including “Strike Tel Aviv” and “intifada.”

The chants have sparked controversy in recent months, as critics argue the phrases can be interpreted as calls for violence against Israel, while supporters of the demonstrations say they are expressions of political protest tied to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The Ramadan event on Staten Island was attended by community members and local leaders celebrating the Islamic holy month.

It is not clear whether Mamdani was aware of Akl’s past protest activity before the introduction.

The appearance comes during a tense political moment in New York City, where Mamdani has faced increasing scrutiny from critics over his positions on policing, immigration, and Middle East politics.

The mayor has not publicly commented on the controversy surrounding the chants or the activist who introduced him at the event.
