BROOKLYN, N.Y. (77WABC) — At least six people were injured overnight and dozens of people were left homeless after an explosion and three-alarm fire happened inside a Brooklyn home.
The FDNY says crews responded to the call just after 12 a.m. at 58 Vermont Street in Cypress Hills. When they arrived, firefighters encountered heavy fire in the cellar, first and second floors of the home.
Fire also spread to neighboring homes and buildings on both sides. The FDNY added that two residents were inside the Vermont Street home on an upper floor when the explosion erupted in the basement. Both were able to evacuate the home with non-life threatening injuries.
The FDNY says over 33 units and 138 firefighters were called to the scene. Con Edison was also called to investigate a possible gas emergency.
Fire officials added that two people at the scene were transported to Brookdale Hospital and four others refused medical attention. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
