(New York, NY) – It made several headlines – the banana that sold for millions at Sotheby’s auction. The fruit was part of Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan’s conceptual piece titled Comedian.  The artwork—a banana duct-taped to a wall—was sold at Manhattan’s auction house for $6.2 million to billionaire crypto-bro, Justin Sun. The actual banana comes from a fruit vendor stand right next to the auction house on the Upper East Side.

A worker at that stand did not even know about the craze surrounding the piece of fruit he sold until he was told by a reporter with The New York Times. 74-year-old Shah Alam was brought to tears when he found out the 35-cent banana earned that jawdropping price tag. Sun claimed on social media that he wanted to give back and buy 100,000 bananas from Alam. Locals also stepped in with a GoFundMe to help the Bangladeshi immigrant that is sharing a basement apartment with 5 other men. Meanwhile, Sun ate the banana as promised in front of a crowd of spectators.
