(New York, New York) – An NYPD captain has been reassigned after a video of him criticizing Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Democratic leadership spread online.
The officer, identified as Captain James Wilson, was seen speaking during an anti-ICE protest in Brooklyn. In the clip, he blasted Mamdani’s leadership and made clear he did not view him as his mayor.
The comments quickly turned into a political firestorm. Critics say a uniformed officer should not be making political remarks while on duty, especially during a protest. Supporters argue Wilson was saying what many officers privately believe after years of rising tension between City Hall and the NYPD.
Wilson has reportedly been moved to a Bronx 911 call center while the department reviews the matter. The controversy now puts a spotlight on police morale, free speech and whether officers are being punished for criticizing progressive city leadership.
