(New York, New York) – The Atlantic is beginning to wake up ahead of hurricane season.

Early tropical waves are being watched, which is normal as the calendar moves closer to June. These systems do not automatically mean a named storm is coming, but they are a sign that the basin is becoming more active.

Hurricane season officially begins June 1, and forecasters are already urging coastal residents to prepare before a storm is threatening land. The best time to check supplies, insurance, evacuation plans and generators is before there is a cone on the map.

Early tropical activity often gets attention online, but most waves never become major systems. Still, after several active years, nobody along the coast wants to be caught flat-footed.

The message is simple: hurricane season is not here yet, but the warning signs are starting to show.
