(Staten Island, NY) – It’s been a busy weekend at a Staten Island bakery where locals have been pouring in to show support after a controversy involving Whoopi Goldberg.
Last week – Goldberg claimed on ABC’s The View that the 146-year old bakery refused to fill her order over her political beliefs. Someone else placed the order and they were able to get the desserts she requested for her broadcast birthday celebration. While she never named the bakery – the unique packaging put Holtermann’s in the spotlight. The owners of the bakery told Entertainment Weekly that the reason they initially refused the order was because of issues with their boilers.
Locals responded to the controversy by showing their support for the staple. Residents say they have been coming for years and no headline will change their loyalty. Shelves were nearly empty on Saturday. At a press conference on Friday, Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella said workers have sacrificed holidays and more to provide sweet treats for the community. The bakery is requesting an apology from Goldberg. Goldberg doubled down in a post on Instagram, saying that she is still suspect.
