HBO released the trailer for Like Water for Chocolate on Tuesday, streaming on Max worldwide. Salma Hayek Pinault produced the Spanish-language series via her Ventanarosa Productions.
Like Water for Chocolate is based on the novel by Laura Esquival, and was previously adapted as a movie in 1992. In the show, Tita (Azul Guaita) and Pedro (Andres Baida) fall in love as children, but when they grow up Tita’s mother (Irene Azuela) commits Tita’s sister (Ana Valeria Becerril) to marry Pedro – and Tita is shown expressing her emotions in the kitchen.
In an interview with Variety, Hayek Pinault said that after six years of development, it is “so satisfying to finally see it on screen. ‘Like Water for Chocolate’ is a true jewel of Latin American literature and film. I wanted to find a new place and way to tell this story, so that a new generation can discover it and the people who already have a relationship with the story can rediscover it in a new format.”
New episodes premiere weekly on Sundays through the show’s finale on Dec. 8; check out the trailer: here.
