(New York, NY) – A vigil was held on Saturday for a 4- year old boy that starved to death in Harlem. Jahmeik Modlin was only 19 pounds when he passed away from severe malnourishment. The local community mourned the loss with a vigil and march, demanding people step up and check in on their neighbors.
Reverend Al Sharpton was at the march and vigil along with one of the members of the exonerated Central Park Five, Korey Wise. The event was organized by WARM – or “We All Really Matter” – a group dedicated to fighting domestic violence.
The parents, Nytavia Ragsdale and Laron Modlin, are behind bars facing charges of manslaughter and endangering the welfare of a child. The pair had three other children, all of whom are also being treated for malnourishment. Investigators say the parents had a fridge full of fresh food facing the wall to prevent the children from accessing inside.
