(New York, NY) — New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency in over a dozen counties Thursday (July 31, 2025) as the state braced for heavy rain. According to the National Weather Service, there was a moderate risk of flash flooding and flood watches were issued in the New York City area. This as millions of people are dealing with rainy weather and potential floods in the mid-Atlantic and Northeast.
Highways had to be shut down temporarily as high water flooded the FDR Drive, parts of the Long Island Expressway, Clearview Expressway and Cross Island Parkway. An 18-wheeler tractor-trailer truck was stuck on the Clearview in the deep water. Service on the Long Island Railroad’s Port Washington Branch was temporarily suspended.
States of emergency were also in effect for all of New Jersey and New Jersey Transit’s Gladstone Branch had to be suspended. Flood prone areas such as Hoboken were on alert. With New Jersey offices closing early due to the weather event, acting Governor Tahesha Way deployed resources across the state.
It’s all due to a cold front moving across the region that’s bringing colder temperatures after a heat dome baked the Eastern part of the country earlier this week. Meanwhile flights were delays at all three major tri-state area airports.
By the weekend, forecasters say skies will be clear, with low humidity and moderate temperatures.
