(New York, NY) — The pro-Palestinian protesters are still on the Columbia University campus green today. The Ivy-League school had given them a Tuesday midnight deadline to leave. Overnight the leaders of the protest negotiated with Columbia to keep some of the tents set up in place, and get rid of others. The demonstrators also agreed to kick out anyone in their tent city who is not a Columbia University student.
Jewish students on campus say they do not feel Columbia has done enough to protect them during the demonstrations. Those protests have been on for more than a week. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson will meet with Jewish students at Columbia today. On Thursday, thousands of Jewish New Yorkers are expected to march near the campus in solidarity with the Jewish students.
Minnesota Democratic Congresswoman Illhan Omar, whose daughter was arrested during a protest at Columbia, says the demonstrations are raising awareness. Protesters at Columbia say they want the Ivy League school to divest from companies they say profit from Israel’s violations of international law and Palestinian rights.
