(New York, NY) – There are now eight ways to look out for heavy people in the US. Ten years after the American Medical Association classified obesity as a chronic disease in need of comprehensive care, an Obesity Bill of Rights has been established. The National Consumers League and the National Council on Aging made the announcement together.
These eight rights for obese people focus on things like screening, diagnosis, counseling, and treatment — as per established medical guidelines. Also, the Obesity Bill of Rights lists other goals like battling against weight bias and weight discrimination. The groups behind the measure also say they intend to pushback against what they call “exclusionary coverage policies” from insurance companies, for obese patients.
