(Des Moines, IA) – On Saturday, as blizzard conditions pounded the Midwest — as well as bitter cold — former President Trump released a video on social media vowing to get to Iowa. Amid the challenging winter weather, the Iowa caucuses are scheduled to begin Monday — kicking off one of the key primary contests in the race to determine who will be the GOP’s nominee for president in November.
Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis canceled events on Friday due to the weather. In Trump’s video, he promised to get to Iowa “one way or another” and expressed hope he’d be there by Saturday night. He’s leading handily in most polls, and some have predicted Trump could score a record margin of victory in Iowa’s primary.
If Trump does win, the margin may or may not set a record — but forecasters say the bitter cold could also set new marks. Caucus-goers could be looking at wind chills in the negative 20’s while moving between local precincts. It’s also highly possible the bitter cold affects voter turnout and participation.
