UNDATEDÂ -(77WABC)- Nestle is airlifting baby formula to the US from the Netherlands and Switzerland amid the crisis, as the FDA orders Abbott Laboratories to overhaul its safety protocols before production can restart – a process that could take months.
Under the agreement with the FDA, Abbott must work with outside experts to upgrade its standards and reduce bacterial contamination at its plant.
The FDA has been investigating the Michigan plant since early this year. Abbott’s voluntary recall and shutdown was triggered by four illnesses and two infant deaths linked to powdered formula. The agreement must still be reviewed by a federal judge.
