New York, NY (77WABC)-Separate rallies and protests in Manhattan Monday in response to the police-involved shooting death of Daunte Wright in a suburb north of Minneapolis. The 20-year-old black man was shot and killed Sunday during a traffic stop for expired tags in Brooklyn Center. The area is not far from where George Floyd died after a police officer knelt on his neck for more than 9 minutes. Officer Derek Chauvin is on trial in Floyd’s death.
The town’s police chief said the officer had apparently intended to fire a Taser, not a handgun, as Wright struggled with fellow officers. Police Chief Tim Gannon described the shooting as “an accidental discharge.”
Rallies and protests were held across New York City on Monday.
