NEW YORK (77WABC)-Official swearing-in ceremonies took place Tuesday as Rodney K. Harrison was sworn-in as the new Chief of the NYPD.
Commissioner Dermot Shea presided over the ceremony:

Harrison grew up in the South Jamaica section of Queens and joined the NYPD in 1991 as a police cadet. After graduating from the NYC Police Academy he was assigned to patrol in Astoria Queens. In 1995, he was promoted to detective, including internal affairs before working in various detective commands in Brooklyn. He was Chief of Patrol before being promoted to Chief of Detectives.
Harrison, an African American, is the highest-ranking uniformed officer within the NYPD. Harrison replaces former Chief Terence Monahan who opted to retire upon accepting a position with the DeBlasio Administration at NYC Hall.
