Staten Island is a No-Squatting Zone

syndication-news-journal-16

Staten Island lawmakers have long pushed for changes in tenant laws. New York State has answered their wishes and now local police have much more authority removing squatters.

(New York, NY) – If you are looking for a place to stay rent-free, Staten Island is not the borough to take up residence. New York City tenant laws have often frustrated landlords, requiring them to take squatters to court before actually kicking them out or removing them from the property. The legal proceedings can delay evictions for months, sometimes years.

Now, with changes in the state law, homeowners can call in the NYPD to remove anyone illegally occupying their property. Squatters can now also face criminal trespassing and burglary charges. The changes come following efforts from local lawmakers like State Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton and Assemblyman Michael Tannousis.

Officials do still warn property owners to take appropriate precautions when leaving your home unattended for a long period of time. Authorities say to make sure bills are paid in a timely manner, and consider installing security cameras or alarms to keep homes secure.
