(New York, New York) – A new study claims Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s proposed city-run grocery store could cost far more to operate than private chains, including Whole Foods, when measured per square foot.

The findings are fueling criticism that the “affordable” model may not be financially efficient and could shift costs onto taxpayers.

Supporters argue the goal isn’t profit, but expanding access to food in underserved areas. Critics say the higher costs raise concerns about long-term sustainability.
