(New York, New York) – A deadly fire in New York City that left four people dead and seven others injured is now fueling a broader political fight over immigration enforcement policies.

Authorities say the suspect, believed to be in the country illegally, had previously been the subject of a federal immigration detainer request. However, city officials did not honor that request, consistent with New York’s sanctuary policies, which limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities in many cases.

The incident has sparked outrage among critics who argue the policy put public safety at risk. Supporters of the city’s approach say the rules are designed to build trust between immigrant communities and local law enforcement.

Investigators are still working to determine the exact cause of the fire and the suspect’s full background.
