A Minnesota mother, Jennifer Marie Stately, has been convicted of murdering her two young sons and setting their home on fire in a case that has shocked the Red Lake Nation community.
On March 15, 2024, Stately was at her home on the Red Lake Nation reservation with her three children when she stabbed her 6-year-old son, Remi, to death. Investigators say she then set multiple fires inside the house, including at the exits, trapping her 5-year-old son, Tristan, who died from smoke inhalation. Her 3-year-old child survived after Stately fled the scene with him.
Authorities quickly issued an AMBER Alert, and Stately was later arrested in Todd County, about 150 miles south of Red Lake Nation. Officers reported that the surviving child showed signs of neglect and poor health.
Stately’s trial lasted roughly two and a half weeks. Despite her defense team attempting an insanity defense, the jury convicted her on all counts, including first-degree murder, murder while committing child abuse, murder in the course of arson, and arson.
Officials described the acts as horrific and unthinkable, emphasizing that the children “had no chance at survival.” Law enforcement agencies, including tribal, local, and federal authorities, participated in the investigation.
A sentencing date has not yet been set, but Stately faces decades in federal prison for her crimes. The verdict brings a measure of closure to a grieving community still grappling with the tragedy.
