(New York, New York) – Stephen A. Smith publicly challenged California Governor Gavin Newsom to appear on his “Straight Shooter” podcast, saying he is “still waiting” for the governor to come on the show and address major issues facing the state.
Speaking Wednesday, Smith said he wants Newsom to answer questions about homelessness, crime, California’s sanctuary status and what he described as “billions in debt.” The longtime sports commentator insisted he is not looking for a confrontational exchange, but rather a direct conversation.
“Gavin Newsom, 22%. Still waiting for you to come on the show, Mr. Governor,” Smith said, referencing recent Real Clear Politics polling averages for the Democratic presidential nomination. Smith noted that former Vice President Kamala Harris currently leads the polling at 31%, while Newsom trails at 22%.
Smith argued that Harris leading the field is an “indictment against the party,” suggesting that “nobody else has stepped up and stood out.” He added that an appearance on his show would be “far more pleasant” than the governor might expect, emphasizing he wants to “ask questions” and “listen to your answers,” not stage a “got you” moment.
As of now, Newsom has not publicly responded to Smith’s invitation.
