(Barnegat, NJ) – For those that like a stroll on the beach during the off-season, beware of one state park in New Jersey. A popular destination – the Barnegat Lighthouse State Park in Ocean County – has become plagued with safety concerns since this weekend. Giant holes, similar to craters, have been surfacing around the iconic lighthouse along a rocky, concrete walkway.
First responders are now warning winter hikers about the risks in the area. Authorities say that if you fall in one of these holes a minor injury may be the best case scenario. Bob Selfridge with the Barnegat Light First Aid & Fire says that people could get stuck in a sand collapse, could develop hypothermia from any possible water in the holes, or could even possibly drown. Officials say they are continuing to monitor the situation but were expecting the holes following a major beach replenishment project.
