Democratic Candidates Making Final Push

(New York, NY) – The mayoral primary in New York City is nearing its finish line — and 77 WABC is stepping up the coverage in the campaign’s final moments. Half a dozen candidates are jockeying for position on the Democratic side — including the presumed top two candidates, former governor Andrew Cuomo, and progressive state lawmaker Zohran Mamdani. A massive number turned out during early voting — with that tally more or less double what’s been observed in past campaigns.

Early voting is now closed, and voters cast their final ballots Tuesday. That leads up to our exclusive Cats and Cosby coverage 9pm Tuesday, as the polls close. Will ranked-choice voting be a major factor in the primary? It could lead to an upset victory for down-the-ballot candidates like Comptroller Brad Lander — or maybe even former comptroller Scott Stringer. A new poll from Emerson College suggests that Mamdani is gaining ground on Cuomo — who was long considered the favorite at the onset of the campaign.

All the while, incumbent Mayor Eric Adams plans to run as an independent in November. And longtime 77 WABC host Curtis Sliwa is running unopposed in the Republican primary. That means a three-way race is likely to unfold ahead of November — with some pundits suggesting it’s a race to “30%” of the vote total. Ranked-choice voting is not used in the general election.
