(Hauppauge, NY) — Suffolk County’s red-light camera program has come to an abrupt end. The county stopped generating tickets from its 216 red-light cameras December first – because Albany never extended the law to keep it active.
There was a bill in the State Assembly to extend the program. But no one in the Suffolk State Senate delegation – four Republicans and one Democrat – pitched a companion bill, so the extension never passed. The county legislature also has to extend the program – but hasn’t – because Albany hasn’t.
The worst part is – if you’ve already got a red-light ticket issued before Sunday, December 1, 2024 – you still have to pay it.
