(New York, NY) – Reports have emerged suggesting that interim NYPD Commissioner Thomas Donlon plans to step down from his position. It may happen as soon as Friday, October 11, just around one month after Mayor Adams chose him as interim top cop. Apparently, a background check held up Donlon’s ability to secure the job — after federal agents raided his Manhattan home in September.
The raid was reportedly focused on seizing materials from decades ago. Donlon had been tabbed by Mayor Adams to take over after former NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban resigned. Caban and his brother had their homes raided tied to an alleged corruption scheme involving security services provided to nightclubs. All of that preceded the indictment filed against Mayor Adams — which alleges federal violation of bribery and corruption laws.
There are reports that Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tisch is in the running to become top cop. She would be the first female to serve in the role, after former NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell held the job during the opening year of the Adams administration. Sewell left the NYPD to take a job with the New York Mets as their head of security. Tisch worked for the NYPD previously as served as “stats chief” — overseeing CompStat.
Mayor Adams has not commented publicly on Donlon’s potential departure or the potential selection of Tisch. There are also reports floating First Deputy Commissioner Ben Tucker as a possibility for top cop. City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams — who is not related to the mayor — called Tisch a good potential choice.
Donlon’s departure, should it come to pass, would be just the latest in a series of high profile resignations for Adams administration. The mayor has pleaded not guilty to the charges he faces, and maintains he’s done nothing wrong. He’s also refused multiple calls to resign. Governor Kathy Hochul has the power to remove Adams from office, and the word is she’s been pushing the mayor to fire people at City Hall, in order to “clean house.”
