(New York, NY) — The people who run the popular Elizabeth Street Garden in Soho say they have officially been served eviction papers by City Hall. Mayor Adams had warned that the city would take ownership of the park to build low income housing for senior citizens.

Robert De Niro, Patti Smith and WABC’s own Curtis Sliwa are among the reportedly 400,000 New Yorkers who have sent letters to Mayor Adams to reconsider and find another place to build his low income housing project.  Neighbors say the garden is one of the few green spaces within walking distance to their apartment buildings. Students who attend nearby PS 130 say the garden has been their green space for years.

City Hall says the gates on the park will be shut for good on October 17th. The people who help run the green space say they still have time to fight off the bid to close them down for good.
