(New York, NY) — The City Council will likely push through legislation today that would pay for a study that addresses what the impact of slavery was on New York City, and if reparations should be paid out to ancestors of slaves. The bill is similar to legislation that state lawmakers passed in Albany.

If the bill passes, the NYC Commission on Racial Equity, and the Mayor’s Office of Equity and Racial Justice would lead the study on the impact of slavery in New York City.  There are more than a dozen other cities  across the country that are also studying the idea of reparations payouts.
