(New York, NY) – New York City is launching a lithium ion battery swapping program in another effort to reduce battery involved fires. The DOT will allow eligible food delivery workers to replace non certified devices with certified, high-quality e-bikes and batteries.
Meanwhile, the Fire Department is launching a one million dollar public education and awareness campaign about the dangers of unsafe lithium-ion batteries. Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh says this will help educate the public on how to store and charge the batteries commonly used in e-bikes. These are the latest in a series of steps the city is taking to help bring down the high number of fires caused by Lithium ion batteries.
