Former House Speaker Pelosi Backing VP Harris

news-state-of-the-union-address-22

March 1, 2022; Washington, DC, USA; U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris (L) and U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) listen as US President Joe Biden speaks during his State of the Union address to a Joint Session of Congress at the US Capitol in Washington, DC, March 1, 2022.

(Washington, DC) – Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is the latest top Democrat to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris as she pursues her party’s nomination for president. Following President Biden’s decision to step down as the nominee, he also endorsed Harris’ candidacy.

Many Democrats are rallying behind Harris as the top choice to become the nominee in place of Biden. This includes the Tri-state area’s Democratic governors — including Governor Kathy Hochul of New York, Governor Phil Murphy of New Jersey, and Governor Ned Lamont of Connecticut. Still, some Democrats have seemingly been hesitant to fully endorse the VP — including former President Barack Obama.

Despite her status as VP, Harris does not automatically become the nominee with Biden’s exit from the race. In fact, Biden won the nomination via the party’s primary system, something Democrats are seemingly ignoring by attempting to anoint Harris as the choice. That said, the DNC’s rules committee will be meeting Wednesday in a bid to achieve clarity regarding how Democrats will go about selecting a new presidential nominee.
