(New York, New York) – On Tuesday afternoon, a Manhattan jury found New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez guilty on 16 counts of federal corruption charges. Since his indictment earlier this year, many from his party have called for him to step down from his Senate position but Menendez has been adamant on staying where he is.

After the guilty verdict dozens of Democrats have called on the Senator to finally step down. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, Senator Cory Booker, and even Senate Majority Leader (D-NY) Chuck Schumer are among the many calling for Menendez to take a seat. Governor Murphy has even asked the Senate to expel him if he refuses to leave. Menendez has reinforced that he will run for re-election as an independent.

After the verdict outside the courtroom Menendez in a press conference expressed that he was disappointed in the jury’s decision expressing that he’s never violated his public oath. Menendez even spoke out at the conference saying hat he’s always been a patriot, and is expecting to be successful in his appeal. Menendez has been a Democratic Senator in New Jersey since 2006.
