New York State health officials are warning about a new drug that's emerging in the Syracuse area. It's nicknamed "Super Mario" and its even stronger than fentanyl.

(Albany, NY) – Amid the ongoing opioid crisis here in the United States, New York officials are sounding the alarm about a specific, new threat. It’s emerging in a big way in the Syracuse area, and the new drug is especially dangerous. Nicknamed “Super Mario” on the street, the drug contains a synthetic opioid that has been shown to be 100 times stronger than fentanyl. And fentanyl is already many times stronger than heroin, for example.

During recent testing, at least two bags of drugs were found to contain “Super Mario” in New York. The powerful narcotic is deadly and can easily lead to overdose. Originally designed to serve in a veterinary capacity as an elephant tranquilizer, the drug is no longer being marketed.
