(New York, NY) — Investigators are still trying figure out what caused a deadly Lower Manhattan parking garage collapse a year after it happened. The Ann Street garage came tumbling down on five workers on April 18th in 2023. The 59-year-old parking garage manager, Willis Moore was killed. Four others were hospitalized, but survived. The collapse also forced neighbors out of buildings next door to the garage. The garage has since been demolished.
In the months after, City Council members promised they would step the enforcement of parking garages all across the city. Today, there are hundreds of city garages that are way past due for inspection. The Department of Buildings reports more than 400 garages have not completed mandatory inspections. Garage inspections are due every six years in the city.
