(New York, NY) — Seismologists say aftershocks could continue for another week following Friday’s earthquake in New Jersey. The U.S. Geological Survey says the four-point-eight-magnitude earthquake was the strongest on the East Coast in 100 years, and shook buildings across the Northeast. The quake was followed by 32 aftershocks, and seismologists expect more aftershocks in the coming week, especially near the epicenter in northern New Jersey.
A 3.8 aftershock was measured just southwest of Gladstone, New Jersey Friday night, and was felt as far away as Long Island. Since then, there have been several minor aftershocks reported. All the subsequent aftershocks have been reported as being below a 2.0.
Friday morning’s 4.8-magnitude earthquake in the Northeast left buildings damaged. We’re learning that at least 25 Newark, New Jersey residents have been displaced due to the quake. People about 30 miles from the epicenter say their homes shifted, with the roofs now touching one another. There are still no reports of injuries from the initial earthquake or any aftershocks.
