(Washington, D.C) — Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene is trying to push GOP House Speaker Mike Johnson from power. The Georgia lawmaker filed a motion on Friday to vacate Johnson from the speakership over his support for the trillion-dollar government spending bill. Greene and a group of conservatives are opposed to the bill due to a lack of spending cuts. Greene is accusing Johnson of giving too much to Democrats during negotiations. Johnson just recently took over as Speaker after California Congressman Kevin McCarthy was voted out in October of last year.
A government shutdown was averted early Saturday morning after the Senate passed a one-point-two-trillion-dollar federal spending bill. The bill was approved by a 74-24 vote shortly after the midnight deadline. The package includes funding for the departments of Defense, Homeland Security, Labor, Health and Human Services, as well as general government operations. President Biden says he will sign the bill immediately.
