(Lake Grove, NY) — Former Congressman George Santos says he is leaving the GOP. It’s the latest in the former representative’s bid to get back to Capitol Hill. He says he’s withdrawing his application to run on the Republican ticket in New York’s First Congressional District in November, and will instead run as an independent. The 35-year-old took to “X” to say that he could no longer affiliate himself with a party that stands for nothing and falls for everything.

The House of Representatives voted to expel Santos from Congress back in December, after the embattled representative pled not guilty to allegations that he illegally used campaign funds for personal reasons. A House Ethics Committee released the findings of its investigation into Santos and alleged numerous instances of misconduct. For example, Santos has been accused of using campaign funds to even pay for things like OnlyFans — a porn site. Santos is still awaiting trial that is expected to begin in September.
