(Trenton, NJ) –Starting today, it’s costing more to drive around New Jersey, thanks to new toll hikes that went into effect at midnight. it’s a three-percent increase which averages about 15-cents on the New Jersey Turnpike and five-cents on the Garden State Parkway. Those toll hikes were approved by Governor Murphy who says they’re needed for road maintenance and for New Jersey Transit. This is the third toll hike since 2020. The increase comes on the heels of an announced 15-percent spike in the cost of a ticket to ride an New Jersey Transit bus or train, starting July 1st, to help close a 106-million-dollar budget deficit.
New Jersey drivers say the toll hikes come just as the MTA in New York City is about to begin it’s congestion pricing plan. The MTA says it already has the system in place to charge drivers 15 dollars to drive below 60th Street in Manhattan. There are a number of lawsuits that hope to stop the MTA in it’s tracks. It’s not clear if any will. MTA leaders had hoped to begin congestion pricing in April, but now say it may not begin until June.
