(New York, NY) — A memorial continues to grow in Central Park for Flacco the owl. who died over the weekend after flying into the side of a building.  It was a year ago, that someone cut the netting to an bird enclosure inside the Central Park zoo, setting Flaco free. Initially zoo workers and others tried to capture the bird, but each time he was able to get away. Eventually they gave up.

New Yorkers had spotted the owl over Manhattan. One high rise apartment owner even set up a camera to capture Flaco’s moves, when he took up residence on his window sill.  Zoologists says Flaco, who had been in captivity for 13 years was able to figure out how to hunt prey on his own. They are doing a necropsy now on the famed bird

Flowers and written tributes to Flaco surround a tree in Central park where the owl had been spotted numerous times. Some who had followed the bird’s adventures say they are glad that he was able to enjoy a year on his own after spending so much time in a enclosure in the zoo.
