(New York, NY) — New York City will fly drones at beaches this summer, with inflatable life rafts that can be dropped to help swimmers struggling in the ocean. The NYPD says they will control the drones remotely from 1 Police Plaza. If a swimmer is in distress, the drone can drop a tube into the water which will open up into a flotation device upon impact. The aerial devices will also have the ability to communicate with lifeguards through a speaker. Mayor Adams says the drones will be deployed in Coney Island first.

The New York City Parks Department is trying to lure lifeguards to work at city beaches and pools this summer. Last summer they did not have enough lifeguards to man every chair. Lifeguards who worked last summer can get a one-thousand-dollar bonus if they come back again this summer.
