(New York, NY) — NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban will deliver his “State of the NYPD” address at Cipriani in Midtown today. The speech comes less than 24 hours after the City Council overrode Mayor Adams’ veto of a pair of controversial policing bills. The “How Many Stops Act will now force police officers to document every interaction they have with the public, and record the gender and race of those they speak with. The information will be posted online.
Mayor Adams says the new law will saddle cops with unnecessary paperwork, and take them away from more important duties. The police union says its worried the new workload could increase police response times Bill supporters, including City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, say the new law curbs racial profiling and will bring more transparency to every interaction the police have with the public.
